Looking for a book to share with your child about loss? Full Circle Grief Center has a library filled with books for children about all different topics. It is located inside Full Circle and the books are able to be checked out by all participants. If you are looking for a place to start, here are some recommendations from our staff.

Grief Is An Elephant by Tamara Ellis Smith and Nancy Whitesides

Recommended by Heather Treptow, Family Bereavement Services Manager 

This book is about a young child’s view on grief. It compares the size of grief to different animals, from an elephant to a firefly. It would be great for someone who enjoys short reads and all animals, not just elephants.

Cape by Kevin Johnson

This book is about a young boy who is experiencing the loss of his father. It talks about the experiences of attending their loved one’s funeral. This book is great for readers who enjoy shorter books filled with colorful images.

My Grief is Like the Ocean by Jessica Biles and Jillian Kelly-Wavering

This book is about a young boy whose father died by suicide. This book is great for someone who likes longer reads and enjoys the water, as it compares grief and the ocean. It could also be helpful for someone who experienced bullying while grieving.

I’ll See You in the Moon by Camryn Wells

This book is a colorful and shorter picture book about grief. It is great for someone who enjoys nature and spending time outdoors. It talks about how you can feel your loved one in everything you do, even the silence. It is also great for families looking for books that represent diversity. 

The Goodbye Book by Todd Parr

This book is great for younger readers, who enjoy bright colors and are learning their emotions. It goes through many different emotions that children could go through while grieving. The book has an easy vocabulary, big pictures and would be great for someone who likes fish.
