Welcome to Family Fridays — a series designed to give parents and children fun, meaningful activities you can do at home to explore feelings of grief and remember your loved one in unique ways.

Times of uncertainty can bring up a lot of feelings for grieving children, but also for us as adults. This activity is one we use in our Hands on Healing group to support families in communicating regularly about feelings.

We encourage families to utilize this jar as a way to check-in with each other about the feelings they are experiencing and how BIG those feelings are.

All you need for this family activity is a mason jar and an assortment of pom poms of various colors and sizes! To create a feelings jar, invite your child to assign a feeling to each color pom pom.

For example, the color red may represent anger and the color blue may represent feelings of sadness. After the child has selected a feeling for each pom pom color, invite them to fill the jar up with the different color based on how they feel. You can use this tool as a check-in at the beginning or end of the day to help support healthy communication of feelings.

Get Creative!

No mason jar? No pom poms? No problem!

You can use any sort of container for your jar — tupperware, a rinsed out food container, or even a clean take-out box.

If you don’t have pom poms at home you can use different color strips of paper, beads, or you can send kiddos on a scavenger hunt to find things of like colors around the house.
