The Impact of Our Volunteers

by Allison Schooley, Operations Director

Each April, National Volunteer Appreciation Week brings the opportunity to shine the spotlight on a valuable segment of Full Circle’s family – our volunteers. This year, we asked Full Circle’s Operations Director, Allison Schooley, to reflect on the role volunteers play in Full Circle’s day to day.

It has been my honor and privilege to work with Full Circle’s volunteers over the past ten plus years. While Full Circle has grown and evolved, one thing has remained constant – our volunteers have hearts of gold and are nothing short of inspiring.

It all starts with our Board of Directors, who embody Full Circle’s values and are dedicated to improving the lives of those grieving in Virginia. They are fast to act in a crisis and are a steady shoulder to lean on all the days in between. On behalf of our entire staff, we are grateful for their support.

With the addition of our individual counseling practice and realignment of some programs, our volunteer needs have shifted a bit. Our volunteer workspace became limited, our tasks fluctuated as even more of what we do required confidentiality, and our hands on opportunities are fewer.

That said, Full Circle is fortunate to have an amazing group of loyal volunteers who receive quarterly newsletters, sign up links, and the occasional direct ask. When the need is there – this group shows up. It’s never been more evident than in the past year. Our volunteers stay informed on Full Circle’s programs – helping us spread the word in the community about the services we offer. Our volunteers help with large mailings twice per year. Our volunteers pick up projects to complete from home when the need arises.

With a move in our recent history, our volunteers spent countless hours in our old supply room helping sort through and test supplies so we could move only what was needed or would fit. Our volunteers signed up for shifts to help at Rare Olde Times on St Patrick’s Day. Our volunteers are currently helping our team prepare for Living Your Dash as they do each year by securing door prize items, packing up supplies, and signing up for roles at the event. The list goes on, but you get the point – our volunteers show up!

One meaningful trend in the past few years is the increase in those who express an interest in helping as a volunteer after receiving services at Full Circle. For us, it’s the ultimate compliment. For these volunteers as for our staff team, it is the opportunity to ensure this space where their loved one is remembered stays available for all those who need it now and in the years to come. The fact that you keep showing up means more than you know!

We are grateful for the impact our volunteers have on the work Full Circle does. I say it often and believe it completely. Full Circle’s volunteers help extend our reach in the community. The work each volunteer does matters to Full Circle and it matters to all those grieving in Virginia. This week, and each week of the year, thank you for choosing to share your time and talents with Full Circle.
